The breakaway cable automatically activates the handbrake when the trailer or caravan breaks away from the car. At that moment, the cable pulls the handbrake, causing the trailer to immediately begin braking. The car's pulling force then puts so much tension on the cable that it breaks. This keeps the trailer braked and prevents it from rolling uncontrollably.
